Are you a fist pumper and horn blower when you drive?
Does waiting in a queue fill you with frustration?
Do you say “yes” when you really want to say “no”?
You get to choose how much anger fuels your energy!
– “Challenge yourself, and believe!” –
Two of the hardest words of the English language to comprehend, accept, and master are ‘no’ and ‘patience’. Such simple words, yet, words that many of us often struggle to use and accept.
In our desire to be accommodating and to please others we often avoid the use of the word ‘no’. Perhaps we think we are being selfless, when in fact we are often hurting our self. ‘No’ is a word that allows us to stand up for our self-worth, our self-esteem and to set the boundaries of behaviour that are acceptable to us. It is not wrong to say ‘no’. It is a hard word to learn to say, but ultimately it is empowering and a reflection of self-worth.

Equally, learning the art of patience is difficult. Mother’s words echo in your head ‘to hold on around the bend’ and that ‘all good things
come to those who wait’. Often the holding on and the waiting are endless, excruciating, and painful. It is hard to accept that we cannot
have all we desire right here and now.
We rail against the need to act with patience. Yet, in doing so all we achieve is self-induced angst, frustration, disappointment, and suffering. Perhaps it is true that there is a time for impatience in our lives, but there is also, more importantly, a time for patience.

How do we learn to accept the flow of nature, the seasons, and time? How do we know when it is time to run and time to sit? Is it our ego that yells for action, results, and for fulfillment – NOW? Is it our soul that gently encourages us to sit, with patience, until a storm has passed?

Perhaps our acceptance and appreciation of patience finally comes when we are able to listen to both the voices of ego and soul and instinctively know which voice speaks with the truth for our greater good. If nothing else, learning patience helps us to find peace in the now, and with reflection appreciate all the blessings that we do have.
Believe! Accept. Breathe.
